Smith, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters, 6th Infantry Brigade, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Smith showed extraordinary heroism during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive from 1 to 27 October 1918, particularly on the night of 22 October when he voluntarily led a patrol into the town of Brieulles-sur-Meuse, which was being heavily bombarded, bringing back invaluable information to the Brigade Commander.
