By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Medical Reserve Corps) Helmer T. Skovholt, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Skovholt distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Officer with the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Le Charmel, France, 25 July 1918, in taking off his gas mask, during a heavy shell and gas bombardment, in order to be able to better care for the wounded.

While serving with the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 25 July 1918, near le Charmel, Lieutenant Skovholt repeatedly exposed himself to gas by not wearing his mask during a heavy shell and gas bombardment because it interfered with efficient first aid work.
