James Roosevelt was the oldest son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Despite his father’s high position and “flat feet” that could have exempted him from military service (he wore soft-soled shoes instead of boots), James Roosevelt repeatedly led Marine Corps Raiders in dangerous actions far beyond friendly lines. His brothers also all served in combat theaters, one of them earning a Silver Star. He was commissioned in the Marine Corps through the NROTC program at Harvard University where he graduated in 1930. He retired as a United States Marine Corps Brigadier General in 1959, following which service he was elected to the United States Congress from California, serving there from the 84th through the 89th Congresses.
