By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Herbert R. Sargent, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Sargent distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near La Trinity Ferme, France, 14 – 15 July 1918, in repeatedly repairing telephone lines under heavy shell fire.

While serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Sargent repeatedly exposed himself with extraordinary heroism to the heavy fire of enemy high explosive and gas shells in open fields and unprotected places, on 14 – 15 July 1918, in the vicinity of La Trinity Ferme, France, in order to promptly repair lines which were often severed by enemy shells.
