By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul H. Plough, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the German attack on the Marne, near Chateau-Thierry, 15 July 1918, Lieutenant Plough showed great courage and bravery in handling his platoon. During the barrage he constantly went along his lines, cheering and by his cool example, steadying his men who were under a terrific fire. Later in leading his platoon in a counterattack against some of the enemy who had succeeded in crossing, they captured 22 prisoners.
