The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Charles R. Kennedy (MCSN: 267247), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with the Twenty-Second Marines, Fifth Amphibious Corps, in combat against enemy Japanese forces on Engebi Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, 18 February 1944. Seriously wounded by fragments from a close mortar hit while advancing under the heavy fire of the Japanese opposing our landing, Platoon Sergeant Kennedy resolutely remained in action and, despite the many casualties and the confusion incident to a hazardous invasion, disregarded his own condition to reorganize his boat group and lead it inland. Although successful in this vital mission, he was killed by enemy fire a short time after landing. His courageous initiative, his fortitude and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of grave peril reflect the highest credit upon Platoon Sergeant Kennedy and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
