By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Krugh, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, ON 4 October 1918, Lieutenant Krugh was in charge of four guns, northeast of Cierges, France. He took his guns forward over a field in view of, and swept by, enemy machine gun and sniper fire, to consolidate a position in advance of a woods very lightly held by the infantry. His guns were located and fired upon by the enemy one-pounders, machineguns and snipers. Lieutenant Krugh held his position for ten hours until relieved at night, meanwhile crossing from gun to gun to instruct his squads and organize his position.
