By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Hiram D. Kinney (ASN: 564697), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Kinney distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 9th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Paroy, France, 15 July 1918, in voluntarily helping to hold an important position.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Hiram D. Kinney (ASN: 564697), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918, Corporal Kinney was in charge of a machine gun on the rail road embankment near Mezy, directly in the path of the enemy attack. This gun did terrible execution until put out of action. Corporal Kinney immediately picked up a rifle and volunteers being called for by the Infantry, he immediately joined an Infantry platoon and went forward in a counter attack which was necessary to hold a threatened position. In the performance of this act, Corporal Kinney was severely wounded.
