The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Gerald M. Rich (MCSN: 323750), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving as a Squad Leader of Company A, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville, Solomon islands, 25 November 1943. In an attack on Grenade Hill, Corporal Rich led his men forward to within twenty-five yards of concentrated Japanese emplacements and, despite mortar, machine-gun and grenade fire, seized and occupied several positions. When an enemy grenade landed in a spot which would have imperiled the lives of three of his men, he risked his own life to cover the grenade with his body. Although seriously wounded by the force of the explosion, he gallantly remained with his squad and directed its fire until ordered to retire and receive medical attention. His leadership, courage and unswerving devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Rich and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
