The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Major & Aide-de-Camp Ernest Von Vegesack, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 27 June 1862, while serving with U.S. Volunteers, in action at Gaines Mill, Virginia. While voluntarily serving as aide-de-camp, Major Von Vegesack successfully and advantageously charged the position of troops under fire.
