By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) J. Helms Hendley, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, France, Lieutenant Hendley was moving with his platoon to his new position in the support line, when caught in the enemy’s terrific barrage. He showed extraordinary coolness and contempt for the danger to which he was exposed while finding shelter for his men. He crossed a shell-swept field to obtain first aid for his wounded and litters to carry them to places of safety, in which he personally assisted, returning immediately to his post.
