The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Francis T. Burke (MCSN: 0-34200), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifle Platoon Leader of Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 3 May 1945. When a large hostile force launched a seaborne counterattack against his Battalion’s left flank in the pre-dawn hours, Second Lieutenant Burke quickly and skillfully maneuvered his platoon to cover the flank and deny the beachhead to the numerically superior enemy. Bringing heavy fire to bear on Japanese landing barges and on personnel wading across the reef, he killed a large number and caused great confusion among those who remained. When a small hostile group gained the beach, he led a group from his platoon to attack and annihilate them before they could secure their position. His courageous leadership and devotion to duty under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
