The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private George E. Orme (MCSN: 885512), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-Ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 16 May 1945. Although ordered to the Battalion Aid Station after receiving a severe bullet wound during an assault on a heavily-defended enemy position in the Naha-Shuri sector, Private First Class Orme steadfastly remained to assist his company due to the seriousness of the situation and, continuing the assault through intense hostile fire, personally accounted for nine of the Japanese. Then, despite his wound, he voluntarily exposed himself to the enemy fire to serve on stretcher details for the evacuation of the wounded. Carrying on until the following day, Private First Class Orme left the front line only after a hospital corpsman, on redressing his wound, discovered that the bullet had gone completely through his chest. His gallant fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
