Sergant Fortier distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Machine Gun Company, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in Bois de Fays, France, 10 October 1918, in applying first aid to the wounded under machine gun and shell fire.
