The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Allen Hal Turnage (MCSN: 0-997), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious service to the Government of the United States in a duty of great responsibility as Commanding General of the THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, from 21 July 1944 to 10 August 1944. A forceful and aggressive leader, Major General Turnage skillfully executed a perilous landing against fierce, determined opposition, steadily drove the Japanese back from their beach defenses and secured the vital beachhead by nightfall. Despite heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire and the difficulties imposed by steep hills, cliffs and thickly wooded areas, he maneuvered the units of his command with expert tactical ability and, repeatedly occupying forward positions to direct their tenacious stand against a series of hostile counterattacks which culminated in an all-out effort by a major portion of the enemy forces, subsequently led his Division in an extremely hazardous advance over rugged terrain and through dense jungle growth to the northern limit of the island. Distinguishing himself by his cool courage and outstanding efficiency and resourcefulness in the face of adverse conditions, Major General Turnage contributed in a large measure to the success of the entire operation on this highly strategic island, and his valiant devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
