Sergeant Dempsey distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 108th Engineer Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Forges, France, 25 September 1918, in building a passerelle across the Forges Creek under heavy shell fire.
