While serving with Company I 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, at Fossoy, France, during intense artillery preparation by the enemy, Private DeRosa exhibited extreme personal heroism and loyalty to Captain J. L. Walthall, his Company Commander. He was with him on his way to the front line when Captain Walthall was seriously wounded by shell fire. Private DeRosa attempted alone to carry the officer to safety and being unable to carry him administered first aid, went to the Company Post of Command and led back litter bearers and brought Captain Walthall to shelter, all while under heavy artillery bombardment. His loyalty and solicitude reached such a height for his Captain, that he became utter oblivious to his own exhaustion or danger.
