No. 43, W.D., 1918), Master Engineer Junior Grade Samuel Cole (ASN: 154941), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Master Engineer Junior Grade Cole distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Cantigny, France, 28 May 1918, in putting up wire entanglements in full view of the enemy and under heavy machine gun and shell fire.

Sergeant First Class Cole worked for one and a half hours without cover, while putting wire entanglements in front of a strong point, under heavy shell and machine gun fire and within sight of the enemy.
