No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Andrew Charles (ASN: 55355), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Charles distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Machine Gun Company, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Verdun, France, 9 October 1918, while a member of a party that beat off a violent assault by fifty of the enemy.

Private Charles distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Machine Gun Company, 26th Infantry, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the operations connected with the capture and defense of Cantigny, France, 27 to 31 May 1918. Private Charles when his corporal and another comrade had been killed, took charge of the gun and remained on duty without relief for three days under artillery and machine gun fire.
