The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert Baird (MCSN: 0-20565), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Night Fighting Squadron FIVE HUNDRED THIRTY-THREE (VMF(N)-533), Marine Air Group TWENTY-TWO (MAG-22), FOURTH Marine Aircraft Wing, during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands from 29 June to 6 July 1945. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, Captain Baird maintained night combat air patrol over our surface forces, contributing materially to the success of his squadron in providing protection against enemy aerial attackers. His airmanship and courage in the face of grave hazards were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
