The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Robert Baird (MCSN: 0-20565), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Night Fighting Squadron FIVE HUNDRED THIRTY-THREE (VMF(N)-533), Marine Air Group TWENTY-TWO (MAG-22), FOURTH Marine Aircraft Wing, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on the night of 22 June 1945. Vectored to intercept a hostile aircraft approaching the base, Captain Baird expertly employed his radar at close range and engaged the enemy despite vigorous evasive tactics. Although thrown into a spit during the fierce and speedy action, he quickly regained his position and continued his dive, blasting the Japanese plane from the sky. Directed to intercept and attack an enemy bombing plane a few hours later, Captain Baird braved intense fire from the hostile craft to pursue his target relentlessly and shoot it down in flames. By his superb airmanship and indomitable fighting spirit, Captain Baird contributed essentially to the success of his squadron in this vital theater of war, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
