The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John Ennis Curran (ASN: 0-444277), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on 12 June 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Curran’s platoon was held up by enemy 20-mm. guns and 88-mm. artillery occupying excellent positions on a hill which was the battalion’s objective. Realizing the situation, First Lieutenant Curran exposed himself to enemy fire without regard to his safety, personally directed the fire of his platoon upon the enemy position, and led the attack driving the enemy from the hill. His actions in leading the attack and repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire were an inspiration to our troops and prevented the enemy from inflicting a far greater number of casualties upon our troops. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Forces of the United States.
