The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Habakkuk Taylor, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 26 November 1969 while serving as a motor sergeant with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while performing his duties at a night defensive position, the camp came under an intense small arms and rocket propelled grenade attack. The air was filled with shrapnel and flames from exploding artillery shells and powder. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Taylor exposed himself to the deadly hail of enemy fire and the shrapnel from within his perimeter to aid the wounded from burning vehicles and carry them to safety. Sergeant Taylor then returned to the perimeter to organize the available men and place them into operative vehicles to form an effective fighting force. Due to his immediate actions the perimeter remained secure and many lives were saved. Sergeant First Class Taylor’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
