The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert H. Carlock (ASN: 0-1324507), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On 23 October 1944, in the vicinity of Opheusden, Holland, he was in command of a platoon assigned the mission of contacting the enemy on the west side of the town. Leading his platoon through the town which was heavily mined, he was fired upon by an enemy force of approximately fifteen men. The danger of the mines in the area caused hesitancy among his men, but Lieutenant Carlock boldly began his approach toward the enemy alone. The men, inspired by this courageous demonstration, followed and successfully attacked the enemy outpost, capturing ten prisoners. Retiring to the village, the platoon was subjected to heavy mortar and artillery fire. Lieutenant Carlock again led his men through the mined village and toward the dike near the Neder Rijn River. Again subjected to enemy fire, the platoon was forced to retire to the road in order to direct artillery fire upon the enemy. Despite the enemy fire, Lieutenant Carlock remained in an exposed position and directed the artillery fire. When some of his men were wounded in this action, aid men were sent for but these were also wounded by exploding mines. Lieutenant Carlock administered aid to all the wounded men. His inspiring leadership and courage were in accordance with the highest standards of the military service.
