The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Edward Branley (ASN: 31003859), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 101st Infantry Division. His organization was in action on Red Section of Utah Beach on the east coast of the Cotentin Peninsula, Normandy, France on 6 June 1944. Disregarding any shock or possible injuries sustained from having been knocked down three times by enemy shell fire, First Sergeant Branley, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, displayed superior leadership and extraordinary bravery under artillery fire. During the landing of his organization on the beach, he exposed himself numerous times to heavy concentrations of enemy fire and possible explosions from a burning ammunition truck to assist and direct the movement of the battalion trains from the beach. By this magnificent display of gallant and courageous action, he saved valuable cargo and ammunition from destruction. He was an inspiration to all in his unit. His actions were in accordance with the highest standards of military service.
