The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fifth Class Brent H. Tanner, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 21 January 1970 while serving as a Medic with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while on operations in dense jungle near the Cambodian border, his troop came under intense mortar, rocket propelled grenade and automatic weapons fire from a battalion of North Vietnamese. When a tank was struck by a rocket propelled grenade, Specialist Tanner immediately dismounted his vehicle and went to the aid of the wounded tank commander, treating him until evacuation was possible. Two other vehicles were disabled and began receiving heavy hostile fire. Specialist Tanner aided the injured men of one tank when the second vehicle caught fire. He removed the crew from the raging fire and again secured evacuation for his injured comrades. Specialist Five Tanner’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
