The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Lawrence S. Southard (ASN: 14022745), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Normandy, France, on 21 June 1944. Corporal Southard, a jeep driver, furnished transportation for First Lieutenant W. E. Smith. Approaching a road junction, he was halted by heavy enemy automatic and small arms fire coming form a strongpoint which covered the road junction. Displaying outstanding courage, initiative, and devotion to duty , Corporal Southard, jumping from the vehicle, engaged the enemy in a fire fight. His action drew hostile attention upon himself and allowed Lieutenant Smith to escape with papers containing vital military information. Corporal Southard’s action revealed this enemy strongpoint and resulted in a well planned attack. The strongpoint was reduced and 800 prisoners were captured. Corporal Southard’s courage and initiative reflected great credit upon himself and the military service.
