The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Willard C. Kidd, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Reconnaissance Troops (Mechanized), 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Monge, France, on 29 August 1944. While engaged in a reconnaissance mission, Sergeant Kidd and the men of his section were detracted by a noise in the nearby bushes. Armed with an M-1 rifle, he went into the woods alone to determine the source of the noise. Coming abruptly upon an enemy officer who attempted to draw his pistol, Sergeant Kidd killed the officer but found himself in the midst of a large detachment of infantrymen armed with light machine guns. Despite intense enemy fire, he managed to rejoin his men and organized them for an attack. The ensuing skirmish ended with three enemy dead, several wounded, and thirty-seven captured, including officers. Sergeant Kidd’s unusual display of bravery and leadership reflects credit upon himself and the military service.
