Headquarters, 4th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 85 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Remel Haskett (ASN: 0-1303264), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Buchet, Germany, on 14 September 1944. Captain Haskett’s company, supported by tank destroyers, was spearheading a battalion attack on a wooded objective. The entire company became immobilized by heavy enemy small arms and mortar fire, emanating from a fortified position. Captain Haskett issued orders for heavy covering fire as he worked his way forward to guide a tank destroyer into firing position and direct its fire at the emplacement. A direct hit near the aperture of the fortification failed to halt the enemy fire, and as the tank destroyer moved closer it hit a mine, killing the crew. Captain Haskett continued his advance through the mined area until he was close enough to hurl a white phosphorous grenade into the aperture. Three men staggered out of the emplacement and were captured. The company was then able to proceed, neutralizing two more fortified positions, and successfully attained its objective. Captain Haskett’s determination and valor were in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
