The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John T. Gunning (ASN: 0-1321507), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Periers, France, on 7 July 1944. On that date, Lieutenant Gunning’s heavy machine gun platoon, attached to Company F, was subjected to heavy enemy artillery, tank and small arms fire. The forward elements of the company had reached a point of safety beyond this heavy fire. Lieutenant Gunning realized the urgent necessity of displacing forward, hence he went through the enemy fire to check the exact location of the forward elements in order that the company might consolidate its position. He then returned and, in total disregard for is own safety, led the remaining platoons forward one by one. Many of the men suffered wounds and Lieutenant Gunning was slightly wounded, but despite serous looses and his own suffering, he continued on his mission until it was fulfilled. His actions were a contributive factor in the success of the battalion’s subsequent attack. Lieutenant Gunning displayed courage and initiative which are worthy of the highest traditions of the military service.
