The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Raymond P. Ferrare, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company D, 70th Tank Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Lauterborn, Luxembourg, on 20 December 1944. Sergeant Ferrare’s tank had supported an infantry company in repulsing a series of enemy counterattacks for four days. As the riflemen prepared to withdraw through enemy-held territory he covered the retrograde movement. Learning that a halftrack vehicle had become disabled by a mine road block, he drove his tank forward through small arms, automatic weapons and rocket fire, and with his turret open he pushed the blazing vehicle through a mine field, detonating an explosive en route. Upon clearing the road he left his tank under undiminished small arms fire, climbed an embankment and assisted in loading 16 casualties on his vehicle and drove the wounded to an aid station. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
