Headquarters, 4th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 42 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Bernhard G. F. Edgar, Military Intelligence Service, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 4th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Montebourg, France, on 14 June 1944. When Sergeant Edgar heard that a reconnaissance patrol was about to enter the enemy lines and obtain military information regarding troop movements and gun positions, he volunteered to accompany this patrol. Although his job as POW Interrogator required no such action, he realized that his thorough knowledge of the language and of enemy military affairs would aid in the securing of the correct type of information. Sergeant Edgar, along with the patrol, stayed behind the enemy lines for a period of 24 hours, constantly exposed to fire from friendly artillery and from enemy machine gun fire and snipers. As a result of his volunteered services accurate data was obtained regarding locations of enemy positions and enemy artillery batteries. The information was of great assistance in the direction of our artillery fire. Such courage and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and upon the military service.
