The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Charles L. Easley (ASN: 34870956), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Le Moyen, France, on 28 July 1944. Sergeant Easley was a member of a patrol assigned the mission of destroying an anti-tank gun which delayed the advance of our troops. The patrol dispersed the crew of the anti-tank gun by rifle fire and grenades, but was then fired on by tanks approaching the town. The patrol immediately maneuvered to meet the tank threat. Rocket launcher teams were placed in the most advantageous positions, but in order to provide them with covering fire, Sergeant Easley occupied a position which was exposed to machinegun and 88-mm. fire from the tanks. The covering fire which he delivered enabled the launcher teams to destroy three enemy tanks and then make a successful withdrawal. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Easley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
