The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Lawrence E. Miller (ASN: RA-37140520), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandaeu-san, Korea. On that date, due to his courageous leadership, his platoon infiltrated through well-entrenched enemy lines to the crest of Hill 1181, a dominating terrain feature. Before the enemy was aware of their presence, he had deployed his men into excellent defensive positions. Immediately, the numerically superior enemy, determined to repel the platoon and hold the hill at any cost, launched repeated fanatical attacks on the small group. Sergeant Miller, completely disregarding his own safety, continually exposed himself to the intense blaze of enemy fire directing his platoon’s defense and encouraging his men. Inspired by his heroic example, the men courageously fought off the vicious enemy onslaughts, and although greatly outnumbered, held their positions. Sergeant Miller, through his inspirational courage and gallant leadership, retained the positions on the strategically valuable hill and inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy. The gallantry in action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Miller on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
