Headquarters, 35th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 58 (December 26, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Alfred S. Hickelheim (ASN: 37634593), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the vicinity of ****, France, on 9 November 1944. Torrential rains had swollen the stream near **** so that it became a swirling, rapidly moving current. Company G, 2d Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, had placed guide-wires across the water from bank to bank to assist the troops in bracing themselves against the strong forces of the water. When two men who were unable to swim lost their grip on the guide-wire, they were immediately pulled downstream. Private Hickelheim, despite his fatigue, at once jumped into the dangerous current and succeeded in saving, with the assistance of two comrades, the lives of the two men who were on the point of death by drowning. Private Hickelheim’s disregard for personal safety in his loyalty to a fellow soldier, his courage and intrepidity, reflect credit upon his character as a soldier.
