Headquarters, 4th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 52 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Pablo V. Caudillo (ASN: 39277579), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Normandy, France, on 10 July 1944. Private Caudillo, a scout in a rifle platoon, while advancing toward an enemy strongpoint, was painfully wounded by enemy machine gun fire. Displaying extraordinary courage, he crawled back to his platoon, giving the location of the enemy gun to the mortar platoon which immediately destroyed them, and enabled the company to advance. Having received first aid, Private Caudillo, painfully and with some difficulty, again made his way forward and located two additional German machine gun positions which had pinned down his comrades. Again wounded, this time more seriously, he summoned his full reserve of physical strength, and with unshakable determination, crawled slowly back to his platoon where he gave accurate firing data. The company mortars then reduced the two German positions enabling the company to advance still further. Private First Class Caudillio’s magnificent courage, devotion to duty, and utter contempt for danger reflect great courage upon himself and the military service.
