The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Floyd R. Bidwell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while with the 4th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in the vicinity of Berdorf, Luxembourg, on 17 December 1944. Lieutenant Bidwell drove his tank straight down the center street in the town firing point blank at buildings housing German anti-tank weapons. Pointing out that much of the fire from the enemy emanated from the basement windows of substantial stone buildings, he realized the enemy had available rocket launchers which were capable of destroying his tanks. He was also aware of the imperative need for prompt penetration and seizure of the town to release an American rifle company which had been trapped in the town for two days. His extraordinary action in driving his tank straight down the main street, firing his guns into the buildings at point-blank range, and destroying many of these strong points, animated his men with the same belligerent attitude. After Lieutenant Bidwell had become a casualty and his tank disabled the attack swept forward unabated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
