The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John C. Benedict, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 4th Infantry Division in France during World War II. The Infantry Battalion with which Private Benedict served as a wireman, while preparing to attack, was subjected to extremely heavy artillery and small arms fire which rendered its position untenable. The unit was re-formed at a point about 250 yards away. Private Benedict volunteered to service communication lines to the observation post, 100 yards beyond the front lines, and to help provide outpost protection for the observers. Although exposed to intense and sustained enemy fire, he maintained wire communication, which enabled friendly artillery to bring effective fire upon hostile positions, thus reducing the enemy pressure against his battalion. He also administered timely first aid to numerous casualties and later led aid men to their respective positions for further treatment and evacuations. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
