The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herbert C. Wilson (ASN: 35745575), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Saarlouis-Roden, Germany, on 18 February 1945. On that date, during the fierce house-to-house fighting in Saarlouis-Roden, Company E came under point blank fire from an enemy machine gun and was completely halted in its advance. Private First Class Wilson, a Company E automatic rifleman, on his own initiative, rushed forward boldly in the face of the hostile fire. Directing withering counterfire against the foe’s emplacement, he forced the enemy gunner to desert his weapon and fleet. Private First Class Wilson’s heroic action in the face of great danger enabled his unit to move forward and occupy important positions from which two subsequent counterattacks were repulsed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Wilson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
