Headquarters, 26th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 147 (June 26, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Arthur C. Tillson (ASN: 0-23546), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Meschor-Dunkredt, Luxembourg, on 3 January 1945. During offensive actions against the enemy in the vicinity of Meschor-Dunkredt on 3 January 1945, the flanks of assault units of the 3d Battalion, 328th Infantry Regiment, were subjected to strong enemy counterattacks. In order to provide protection for his troops as they withdrew to defensive positions on a line with other flanking friendly units, Lieutenant Colonel Tillson, Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, went forward through hostile machine gun and small arms fire and skillfully directed the counterfire of several machine gun squads and their supporting riflemen on the advancing enemy. Although fully exposed to the enemy fire as he moved from one automatic weapon position to another, Lieutenant Colonel Tillson encouraged and inspired his gunners to maintain their covering fire until the Battalion elements had completed their movement successfully. His superior leadership, unusual courage under fire and loyal devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Colonel Tillson and the Armed Forces of the United States.
