Headquarters, 26th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 147 (June 26, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Donald Stuart, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations in 1945. When his platoon leader was wounded, Technical Sergeant Stuart, a Company quad leader, assumed immediate command of the platoon, reorganized his men skillfully and led them forward in the attack. When the unit was temporarily held up by the flanking fire of an enemy machine gun, Technical Sergeant Stuart courageously crawled forward alone, three several well-aimed hand grenades in to the hostile emplacement and killed two members of the three-man enemy gun crew and wounded the third man. His heroic action enabled the platoon to continue its successful advance. His able leadership and aggressiveness, in action against the enemy reflect the highest credit upon Technical Sergeant Stuart and the Armed Forces of the United States.
