The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Edward A. Stanulis, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, In action near Albestroff, France, on 22 November 1944. During the attack against the enemy on 22 November 1944, elements of Company I were moving through the wooded area northwest of the town when they came under intense enemy machine gun and nebelwerfer fire. Moving at the head of his men, Captain Stanulis, Commanding Officer of the Company, was struck by hostile fire and seriously wounded in both legs. Although unable to walk, he refused to be evacuated and retained command of his unit. As the enemy fire became more intense, he ordered his platoon leaders to move the troops to an alternate defensive position, suitable also as a jumping-off point for a subsequent attack. After having made these decisions in a rapidly moving situation and while in severe pain, Captain Stanulis remained where he had fallen, and plans were laid to evacuate hm in the dark. Before the rescue party could get to Captain Stanulis however, the enemy counter-attacked in force. Company I successfully repelled the counter-attack, but later search of the area where Captain Stanulis had fallen failed to reveal his presence. Captain Stanulis is at present officially listed as missing in action. His superior leadership, cool courage, and strong devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Captain Stanulis and the Armed Forces of the United States..
