Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 288 (October 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Alfred Kelly (ASN: 32735058), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in Germany. On 17 February 1945, during bitter house-to-house fighting at Fraulautern, Germany, Sergeant Kelly deliberately exposed himself to enemy fire in ascertaining hostile positions, and after dislodging enemy troops from one house led his men to cover. When hostile self-propelled gun fire trapped several of his comrades in the house and forced the capture of his platoon leaders, he rallied friendly troops, set up a perimeter defense around the collapsed structure and fiercely fought off renewed enemy attempts to capture any more of his comrades. Sergeant Kelly’s defiant leadership and unswerving devotion to duty are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
