The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David C. Schoentag, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy, while serving with the 26th Infantry Division in France, on 8 November 1944. During a daylight attack, Lieutenant Schoentag, 2d Battalion Intelligence Officer, noticed that a platoon had halted under enemy small fire. He moved to the platoon’s position and started forward. A few minutes later the evacuated area was subjected to heavy mortar barrage. By his resourcefulness numerous casualties among members of the platoon had been averted. After advancing into the town, Lieutenant Schoentag aided materially in its capture before he was wounded by sniper fire.
