Gabriel Ivan graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of June 1943. Following the war he graduated from Harvard Law School and served as assistant to Secretary of Army Stevens and was on the courtroom counsel team in the McCarthy-Army hearings. He retuned to infantry serving in Korea and additional assignments throughout the States and in Europe including his last assignment as Professor of Military Science at the University of Richmond between 1969 and 1973. He retired in 1971 as a U.S. Army Colonel.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Ivan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
