The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John D. Fargo, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, *** Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Wiltz, Luxembourg, on 29 December 1944. On that date the positions of Company C were counterattacked by enemy infantrymen supported by tanks. One hostile tank flanked by enemy foot troops, emerged from a woods approximately 200 yards from the foxhole position of Private First Class Fargo, a Company C machine gunner, and commenced to roll forward. Private First Class Fargo immediately opened automatic weapons fire on the enemy causing the tank to halt and forcing the enemy infantrymen to take cover. Although wounded in the wrist by hostile counter fire, he courageously continued firing, succeeding in hitting several of the enemy troops, and through his stubborn resistance drove the armed vehicle and the remaining infantrymen back into the woods. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
