Headquarters, 26th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Frank J. Ellman (ASN: 33459139), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Luxembourg on 10 January 1945. While advancing against the enemy, an infantry squad led by Staff Sergeant Ellman came under intense enemy machine gun fire from concealed positions and the squad was held up at a point 75 yards from the hostile lines. In order to ascertain the foe’s position, Staff Sergeant Ellman courageously moved forward along the right flank of hostile fire. His bold maneuver succeeded in drawing the enemy’s fire upon himself, which disclosed their position to the members of his squad. In the final phase of the furious fight and just before his men overran the position, Staff Sergeant Ellman was killed by enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army. .
