Headquarters, 26th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 57 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Mansfield Dixon (ASN: 0-1293730), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action near Guebling, France, on 19 November 1944. During the offensive operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Guebling on 19 November 1944, First Lieutenant Dixon, Company A weapons platoon leader, while leading his men in an early evening assault against the foe, observed that heavy enemy artillery fire had succeeded in splitting his platoon. The rifle platoons of the Company had also been halted in this advance when they encountered powerful enemy automatic weapons fire to the front. In this crisis, First Lieutenant Dixon immediately dispatched runners and brought up his ammunition bearers and after personally reconnoitering the area began the emplacement of his machine guns in positions which he had selected. At that point First Lieutenant Dixon was struck and severely wounded by an enemy shell burst. Completely disregarding his own safety and refusing all efforts to evacuate him, First Lieutenant Dixon continued to re-organize his platoon and direct his gun crews into the positions which he had chosen. He then directed a withering barrage of automatic weapons fire upon the enemy which completely neutralized their positions, and only after the situation was under control did he permit himself to be evacuated. First Lieutenant Dixon’s heroic actions in the face of great danger secured his platoon positions and enabled the company to continue its advance against the foe. This outstanding courage under fire, superior leadership and aggressiveness in action reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Dixon and the Armed Forces of the United States.
