The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Wendelin F. Daimler (ASN: 32789281), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 101st Engineer Combat Battalion, 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Scarlouis-Baden, Germany, on 1 February 1945. On the night of 1 February 1945, Sergeant Daimler, a Company D squad leader, and two comrades went forward to reconnoiter for possible crossing sites over a small tributary of the Jear River. As the three men approached the stream approximately fifty yards before hostile lines, the enemy sent up flares and covered the immediate area about the reconnaissance party with small arms, artillery, and mortar fire. After being held up by the hostile action for half an hour, Sergeant Daimler and his two companions moved along the stream and discovered two fixed foot bridges some five hundred yards apart. In order to ascertain whether or not he bridges were intact, the three men courageously crawled the entire length of both structures through enemy machine gun fire directed at waist-high level. Finding both bridges were intact throughout, Sergeant Daimler and his comrades began to crawl to the rear and, although driven to cover again by the close enemy fire, managed to return to their unit with the valuable information. The unusual courage under fire, resourcefulness, and loyal devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Daimler and the Armed Forces of the United States.
