(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Samuel S. Burnette, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving liaison officer with the 263d Field Artillery Battalion, 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations. Although without rest or sleep for 30 hours, Captain Burnette left the comparative safety of his foxhole, and moving to a position exposed to the main brunt of the enemy counterattack, directed accurate artillery fire on the foe until the hostile assault elements were repulsed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Burnette, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
